Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of massage that works on the lymphatic system – it promotes the movement of lymphatic fluid out of the tissue and to the lymph nodes.
WHAT IS THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM?
The lymphatic system is a part of the body’s immune system composed of lymphatic vessels, intervening lymph nodes and collecting ducts. It collects excess fluid that drains from cells and tissue and moves it to your bloodstream for recirculation.
Lymph is the fluid that flows through the lymphatic system and consists of this excess cell and tissue fluid plus other substances – proteins, minerals, fats, nutrients, damaged cells, cancer cells and foreign invaders (bacteria, viruses, etc). Lymph also transports infection-fighting white blood cells (lymphocytes).
Lymph flow is a one-way system and relies on movement and the contraction of your muscles to make it flow.
KEY FUNCTIONS OF YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
- Maintains fluid levels in your body
- Absorbs fats from the digestive tract
- Protects your body against infection
- Transports and removes waste products and abnormal cells
Many conditions can affect the vessels, nodes and organs that make up the lymphatic system. Some happen during development before birth, others can develop as a result of disease or injury.
